Learn to Promote Your Books – Yourself Authors need to learn how to promote their books. It may sound simple, but there is a lot to learn. Some authors believe they can write an incredible book and the publisher handle all the promotion. Sad to say, those days are gone for most authors. We know some authors are given a promotional budget by their publishers, but they are the exception and not the norm. The publishing business has become much more competitive and authors who want to sell books need to learn to market themselves and their books. Some publishing companies request a marketing plan when you submit a query letter and synopsis. When I submit query letters or non fiction book proposals, I mention that I have sixteen years of marketing experience. Learn the Marketing Mindset There are authors do not want to learn how to promote their books. The decision is yours, but authors who learn self-promotion will sell more books. Think about it. What is your goal in writing? Do you want to hold your books, flip through the pages and smell the new book scent? Or, do you yearn to hear that readers loved your story and want to read more? Even if you aren’t writing to make money, it is necessary to make sales in order to share your work with others. We’ll discuss techniques needed to build and utilize a marketing plan. Use the Internet to Promote Your Books The internet offers a variety of ways to promote books. A large number of these possibilities are free or low cost options. The internet is a wonderful way to get the word out about your books. It offers opportunities to network with other authors and with readers. You can find a wealth of message boards, forums, networking sites, blogs and other ways to stay in touch and circulate information about your books. I believe all authors need a website to promote their work and especially e-published authors who have e-books available. Why would you miss a golden opportunity to communicate with computer savvy readers? How To Promote Your Books in the Real World Your books need to be promoted in book stores and other retail outlets. Book signings, speaking to readers, craft shows and writer’s conferences are just a few places where you can promote books and create a name for yourself. Are book stores the best place to sell your books? I read articles that state book stores are not the best place to sell your books. We’ll discuss other avenues you can utilize to build name recognition for yourself and your books. Creation and distribution of press releases can generate interest in your books. These are just a few of the topics you can learn about on this site. The goal is to help you learn how to share your work with interested readers. Of course, it won’t hurt that effectively promoting your books will help you make money. A list of node types you want to associate with categories in this container.
Hierarchy:
*
Disabled

Multiple
Allows
a tree-like hierarchy
between categories within a container. Depending on your distant parent configuration, this may also allow a hierarchy between categories and containers regardless of their parent container. Be aware that the
multiple
option refers to multiple parents, as opposed to multiple levels of hierarchy.
Related terms
Allows
relations
between arbitrary categories or containers.
Synonyms
Allows
synonyms
for a category or container, such as misspellings and acronyms.
Free tagging
Content is categorized by typing terms instead of choosing from a list.
Multiple select
Allows nodes to have more than one category from a particular container (always true for free tagging).
Required
If enabled, every node
must
have at least one category from within this container.
Hidden container:
*
Enabled
Disabled
Sets this container's 'hidden' attribute. This attribute is not used by the core category module, but can affect how this container is treated by other modules. For example, hidden containers do not have menu items generated by category_menu, and are not shown in navigational elements by category_display. This hidden behaviour applies only to the container itself, not to its child categories or to their assigned nodes.

The depth of child categories that a node listing reflects. Set this to a negative value to reflect an infinite depth. Although a container cannot be assigned nodes, it can still list nodes of child categories, if it has a depth that is not 0.

Specifies the containers from which categories in this container can have parents. If you select containers other than this one, then categories in this container can have distant parents. It is recommended for security reasons that you only select this container (which is the default), unless you are certain that all users adding categories to this container are both experienced and trustworthy.
Category menu items
For categories and containers, these settings only affect new nodes; update operations are performed if a menu item already exists for a particular category or container, regardless of these settings. For assigned nodes, these settings affect new and existing nodes. For categories and containers, if the parent of the node being created does not have a menu item, then the system will traverse all ancestors (of lightest weight) in the category tree, until one with a menu item is found, or until the top of the tree is reached.
Menu items within this container:
Disabled
Enabled
Enabled (breadcrumbs only)
Enabled (and display each item expanded)
If enabled, menu items are automatically created and maintained for child categories. If set to 'enabled (breadcrumbs only)', then menu links will not be visible, but breadcrumbs will be. If this container has its 'hidden' attribute
disabled
, a menu item is also created and maintained for the container itself. In this context, a child category is one that belongs to this container, even if it has another container as its distant parent. If a category has multiple parents, then it will be placed underneath the parent with the
lightest weight
as a menu item.
Menu items for assigned nodes:
Disabled
Enabled
Enabled (breadcrumbs only)
If enabled, menu items are automatically created and maintained for nodes assigned under one or more child categories. If set to 'enabled (but disable each item)', then menu links will not be visible, but breadcrumbs will be. Nodes will be placed underneath whatever category is of the
lightest weight
.
