So far we have covered the ai and ay phonograms. This next phonogram is different from the other two. It has four letters instead of two, but it still makes the "A" sound. In this lesson we will cover a third phonogram that makes the "A" sound.

 

eigh Phonogram

Phonograms are letters that stand for a single speech sound. Phonograms stick together. They work with each other to make one sound.The letters eigh are a phonogram. They make the "A" sound.

eight, eighteen, neighbor, weight, neigh

 

 

 

Using the eigh Phonogram

The eigh phonogram is friendly. It can be in the beginning, middle, or end of a word.

Beginning: eighty

Middle: freight

End: weigh, sleigh

So far we have covered three "A" phonograms (sound families) that only speak one language. They say "A".

The last two "A" phonograms (sound families) are special. They say "A" but they have learned to speak other sounds.
