The "A" Sound Rule covers the many times you hear the "A" sound in a word but an "A" Sound Family is not used.

This rule is very easy.

To understand the rule you must remember what consonants are.

 

Vowels and Consonants

There are twenty-six letter in the alphabet. Five of the letters are vowels.

A,E,I,O,and U are vowels.

The letter Y is consonant but some times the letter Y is used as a vowel for I

Example: study, cry, dry, emergency

Consonants are all the letters of the alphabet, except the vowels (A-E-I-O-U, and sometimes Y) Consonants: b-c-d-f-g-h-j-k-l-m-n-p-q-r-s-t-v-w-x-y-z

 

 

"A" Sound Rule

cake, date, plate, wake, snake, cape, waste

Each of the above words has something in common. Look carefully at the consonants and vowels in each word.

The pattern for the "A" Sound Rule is letter a, consonant, letter e

Sometimes the pattern can be Letter a, consonant, consonant, letter e
