Step 2 in Developing a Marketing Plan, What are the Novel
Attributes
Figure out how the novel is unique.
Figure out what about the novel is remarkable, unforgettable,
unique and use this to entice the customer. How does the author
figure out these attributes?
By asking some questions about the novel.
What does the novel do, how is it meant to help others?
An example for a writer might be: What are the benefits of
writing one genre over another?
What is the target audience?
Will the novel be fiction or non-fiction?
Will the novel be for children or adults?
What is it that sets the novel apart from the million others on
the market?
Use the imagination and make the answers very detailed, this
will help when marketing the novel begins. Write the answers to
these questions down and use them to help to tailor the
marketing plan to the novel.
Communicate to the Customer
All the answers to the questions for the marketing plan are
written down, now what to do with them? With the marketing plan
the products attributes can be communicated to the customer by
tailoring the marketing plan to the specific novel. Blog about
the unique characters or the story line being different. Join
webrings and market the novel through them by having a blurb
from the novel in the signature of the blog. Do free short
stories to show the caliber of writing the novel contains then
use a signature that goes back to the novels website.
Exercise
If the novel is complete and ready to market or not even
begun, search for blogging sites that will help the novel and in
turn that will help market the author.
