Room To Think
Do you have a room or part of your house where you can escape
from everyone else, even for a little while? That might be a
good place to set up a home office. Once you've identified the
location, there are a few more things you can do to make it
right for writing, editing and proofreading.
Get The Right Accessories
The most important piece equipment a writer needs is a
computer. You may already have one. If you don't, don't worry.
It doesn't have to be expensive and there are some good deals
from PC retailers and on Ebay. A laptop is a good purchase
because you'll be able to write anywhere. If it has a wireless
networking card you'll be able to connect to the internet as
well.
Hardware and Software
You will probably need a printer as some places only accept
submissions by traditional mail. A laser printer gives a crisp,
sharp look, but an inkjet is a good option if you're on a
budget. Your computer will need to have a good word processing
program (there are cheap or free ones available) and an internet
connection. This will be essential for researching and
submitting your stories. Dialup is a good basic option, but if
you need to submit images with your writing, you may better off
with cable or DSL.
Get Comfy
Make sure you have a comfortable chair to sit in, and place
your keyboard at the right height for typing. You'll need
somewhere close at hand to put a cup of coffee or tea. Freelance
writers spend a lot of time at their computers. Remember to keep
it away from the keyboard, though.
Get Organized
Keep copies of your articles, of correspondence (whether
email or snail mail) and of all relevant bills so you can claim
any tax relief or expenses due to you. Keep a notebook and pen
and if you have it put a notice board up near the desk. It's a
great place to scribble reminders and to stick up notes about
ideas. Keep a file with ideas for writing articles and decorate
with a few family photos.
